FileMaker Pro Runtime is a standalone, royalty-free application generated from a FileMaker Pro solution. It packages your database schema, layouts, scripts, and data into an executable for macOS or Windows, allowing end users to run your custom app without installing or licensing FileMaker Pro. This makes it useful for distributing single-user tools such as data collection apps, product catalogs, kiosks, and small business utilities.
Runtimes are designed for offline use and store data locally. They offer a consistent FileMaker-based interface and can leverage many scripts and plug-ins, but they have important limitations compared to the full FileMaker platform. Notably, they do not support multi-user hosting, advanced sharing, or some integration features. The runtime capability has also been deprecated in recent FileMaker releases, so while existing runtime apps may continue to work on supported operating systems, new projects are typically better served by the current FileMaker/Claris platform with FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Server, or WebDirect for deployment and sharing.
